Kim Simac - Owner Trainer
Kim Simac is the owner and head trainer at Great Northern Riding Club. Kim started riding at 9 years old in Northbrook, Illinois. As a little girl she rode any and all horses available on any given day. Her horse showing experience started during those year in Western and English at horseshows in the northern Illinois vicinity. She took her love for horses with her to northern Wisconsin in 1982, and they have been a major focus in her life ever since. After training horses and riders competitively in the Wisconsin Hunter/Jumper circuit during the 80”s and 90’s, she and her husband built and opened Great Northern Riding Club. Celebrating their 20th year bringing the best of the world of horses to Vilas County participants who ride at GNRC are introduced to first and foremost a love and respect for the beautiful and honorable animals the Equine is. Lifelong relationships and friendships are forged at GNRC, and a high percentage of alumni have continued their learned experiences at GNRC into their adult career choices. Though Kim is extremely proud of her large family and ever growing number of grandchildren, she is forever thankful to her mother who signed her up for riding lessons so very long ago.
Lauren Hughes - General Manager
Lauren started with Great Northern Riding Club as a 9 year old horse enthusiast! She regularly attended lessons and overnight camp growing up and then began stepping into a leadership role in high school. Through-out the years that followed Lauren has served as a camp counselor, assistant trainer, horse show coach, office manager, and organizer of the Eagle River Hunter Jumper Horse Show. Lauren works hard to help manage the health of the GNRC herd as she is graduating from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine this May. Her favorite part of Great Northern Riding Club is the endless memories and friendships she has created over the years. “There is nothing quite like that moment when you watch a little girl fall in love with the world of horses and not just the sport of riding. The responsibility, work ethic and respect young equestrians develop at GNRC, is something I have enjoyed watching and being a part of over the years. ”
Mandy Murphy - Assistant Manager
Mandy started spending her summers riding at Great Northern Riding Club at the age of 6. Her family owned a local resort in the Northwoods’ and she would pack up her life and head north every summer for months of summer horse fun. Through-out the years Mandy has matured into a very talented rider and has been very successful showing much of the GNRC herd. She now spends her time as an assistant trainer and camp counselor coaching young riders and training at horse shows. She enjoys being able to watch young riders develop skills and build confidence while creating lasting connections with a horse. She also continues to help ride our younger horses, horses in training and often shows our green horses.
Mandy is currently a junior in college and pursuing a degree in Animal Science. Her favorite part of Great Northern Riding Club is being a part of a place that functions like a big family. “The friends and young girls I have been able to mentor through-out the years have become a very important part of my life and I enjoy being able to maintain these great relationships.”
